The Best Choice for our next MP

Amy Kitcher grew up in Merthyr Tydfil and lives in Pentrebach with her family. Amy has worked in the Welsh Assembly and now works for a national domestic abuse charity.

Amy's passion for getting things done is what sets her apart from her opponents. She spoke out against the Ffos-y-Fran opencast mine and more recently has been challenging council leaders to cut out waste, like free booze and food for councillors.

As the youngest woman councillor ever elected in Merthyr Tydfil, Amy has spent that last two years fighting tirelessly for local residents in the council chamber.

An active member of the community, Amy is a school governor and recently ran the Cardiff Half Marathon to raise money for Ty Hafan Children's Hospice.

In the May 2007 Assembly elections, Amy came a strong second - pushing Labour to their lowest vote in over a century. She is now widely seen as the only serious contender to Labour in the Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney constituency.

Speaking about the upcoming General Election, Amy Kitcher said,

"Residents in Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney always tell me that they want an MP who know what it means to do a hard days work; who worries about keeping their job and know what it's like to have to provide for a family.

"Local people should be represented by someone who understands how they live - who uses the same local services. Our MP should be someone who is a visible presence in the community. Someone who is accountable and transparent about the way they do things.

"Brought up in Merthyr during the Thatcher years, I have seen what both Conservative and Labour governments have done to our community. After 12 years of Blair and Brown people are wondering what they have to show for it. Sadly our local services are still under threat and our boom and bust economy rolls on exactly the same. People are ready for real change.

"The Liberal Democrats are now the most radical, honest and progressive of the mainstream political parties. I want to work with local people to bring change to our valley communities and together, I know we can find a fairer way of doing things in the future."
