Labour and Independents vote to close Merthyr's Sixths Forms

Labour and the Independent group on Merthyr Tydfil council, last night voted to close all sixth forms in the borough and build a single tertiary college. Lib Dems have opposed these plans from the outset, citing 'unanswered questions' as the basis of their concerns.

An average of five polls conducted immediately after the Sky TV Leaders Election debate on Thursday night put Nick Clegg as the winner, with all instant polls showing him ahead of Gordon Brown. After the Foreign Affairs-led debate from Bristol dominated by issues like Iraq, immigration and climate change, Nick Clegg won 3 of the 5 polls on the night, building on his position after the first debate.

Cleaning up the Biffa Fund

Merthyr Tydfil Liberal Democrat Councillors have welcomed the news that the process of handing out £300,000 in 'Biffa' grants to local organisations is to be tightened. The fund will be brought into line with other public grants, with some basic anti-fraud measures to be introduced from next month.
