Popular local campaigner Amy Kitcher has been selected to stand in Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney at the next general election.

Amy, 26, stood in Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney in the 2007 Welsh Assembly Elections and came a strong second.

Amy said, "I am delighted to have been selected to stand in my home seat again. After almost 100 years of Labour rule, our community suffers some of the worst health and deprivation in Europe. Merthyr needs a strong voice at Westminster, not another Labour 'yes man'.

"I will continue to campaign on the issues that matter to real people. I am currently leading a campaign against Labour's Post Office closures. I will fight to protect our local services, like Prince Charles Hospital."

The Liberal Democrats finished in second place in the last two elections in Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney and are widely seen as the only serious contenders to Labour.

Amy Added "In May we made real progress in the election. I finished in a strong second place, and Labour got their lowest vote for a century. The people of Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney have been let down by Labour and I want them to know that there is an alternative. They don't have to keep voting for the party that has let them down time after time. Together, we can show Labour that they cannot take the people of Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney for granted any more."
